ABOUT THE HORSE SHOWS OF THE

THOROUGHBRED EXHIBITORS ASSOCIATION

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

Thoroughbred Exhibitors Association produces three horse shows each year, usually held in Canby, Oregon at the Clackamas County Fairgrounds. This facility offers stabling and a covered warm-up area, as well as concessions and camping on the grounds. Our first show is a spring schooling show held in late March. This show is open to all breeds with only a few classes limited to thoroughbred and half-bred horses. We produce this show as a way for other horse owners to meet us and for the young and green horses and riders to begin their careers. This show features many walk-trot and walk-jog classes.

Our other two shows are limited to registered Thoroughbreds and Half Thoroughbreds which can show at least one pure Thoroughbred parent. The first is a Spring show, usually held in late May or very early June. This is a singly judged show recognized by the Oregon Horsemen’s Association and by the Oregon Family Equestrian Activities group for breed points. The second show is a doubly judged, recognized show usually held in September. All of our shows feature high point awards for various divisions, as well as ribbons to five places. They are run under our own rule book as well as the general rules of the OHA, OFEA and USAE. Copies of these rules are provided to all new members, or can be purchased at the show.

Since we stress the versatility of our horses, our shows have quite a variety of classes. We offer halter, showmanship, driving, English and Western rail classes, dressage and hunter hack classes, hunter over fences, trail horse, western pattern and reining, and gymkhana games, as well as hunt seat and western equitation for both youth and adults. We encourage people to keep expanding their skills to new areas by offering novice levels. Our shows are competitive, but friendly and encouraging to the new showman and the many amateurs that attend.

In addition to our own shows, there are now Thoroughbred and Half-Thoroughbred classes available in other area shows. Some examples are those offered by the Central Oregon Buckskin Club, the Hopper Ranch Show series, and the OHA Gold and Silver Classic shows. Listings of these shows with dates and classes can be found on our calendar page.
